Why most of the graduates are termed “Unemployable”?

I was much tensed because my exams were up in front in a few days. I was going through this usual ordeal of fear that every student has before his or her exams. “How am I going to cover the syllabus before the dooms day?” this was the question that was lingering in my mind. And the tension was taking its toll on me. I was almost scared to death. That is when I decided to go to my friend’s place with a hope to ward off my fears and feel better.

As I entered his room I saw him preparing notes for the exam. I was ashamed of myself when I saw his sincerity. I unbundled all my fears in front of him. He said, “What is the big deal? We have enough time to study”. I was surprised to hear when he said that, because the portions for the exam were very vast. And you know how the post graduate syllabus is like. The books are so thick that they can literally be used as a pillow.

Now I was very curious to know his mantra. I was desperate and asked him to help me out with the situation. I was surprised to hear his suggestion. He suggested me to mug-up all the titles and sub-titles of the topics listed in the syllabus and then to study all the diagrams associated with them. “And that’s all you got to do, it is as simple as that”, he said that with a smile. I asked, “what about the contents that I would have to write under the titles and sub-titles”. He suggested me to fill it up with my own stories. He said, “Who is going to go through what we have written? They are only going to go through the titles and the diagrams and award marks.”

And within an hour or so his studies were done and I saw him turning on the television set to catch up with the India-Pakistan one day cricket series that were going on.

So this is the state of Indian education today. Who is to be held responsible? The students who seek the easy way out or the members of the evaluation system who are so lethargic in going through the papers properly?

Most of the Indian industries find most of the students they recruit through campus processes to be unfit for the post for whatever they are being selected. These students have an excellent track record as far as their academics are considered. But when it comes to stuff they are tagged unfit. This is why you find most of the students being dropped off the companies during their probation period. If this doesn’t happen then at least their probation period gets extended.

So who is really to be blamed? There is no doubt that the education system and the infrastructure that we have today are one of the best. Even the syllabuses that are being taken as part of the curriculum are up-to-date and are in par with the latest trend. So where is that we are going wrong?

Is it the

1. The student’s care-free attitude.
2. The faulty evaluation system and the lethargic members of it.
3. Or the incompetent management.

So where can we bring a change? Who has to change? The answer to this is “EVERYONE”.

The evaluation system should be changed. They have to be strictly monitored because the careers of the students are at stake. In a way they are encouraging the students to choose the easy way out.
The management should take strong action against the evaluators who are found guilty. They must be strictly monitored.

And the student’s community must realize that all these short cut methods are helpful in getting marks on the board. But in the long run it is absolutely useless. We must realize that marks are just going to get us across the initial hurdle, set for the selection criteria in companies during the interview, but what really matters is the amount of knowledge we have acquired in the all these years. That is the only thing that can make us grow in our career.

They say, “Rights Come with Duties”. And I say, “Duties Come with Responsibilities”. If Right to Education is our fundamental right, then attaining it in the right way is our fundamental responsibility.

Our life is our responsibility, and if we realize this, then there won’t be any reason to blame others. The key is to correct ourselves rather than trying to correct others. When we realize our responsibilities and act accordingly there can be no one to stop us from attaining what we want.

So let us chase our dreams by realizing our responsibilities.

Please do leave your comments on this article. I would also like to have your comments on the photograph too. I am up on my next article. So friends, please do stay in touch. Till then take care and keep smiling and of-course do take care of your responsibilities..

Ohh! I never thought you would go this far... Any way you have taken what I said to a whole new level.
As the manager of the company I work for - I always have people coming to my office to ask for job's and drop off their CV's. Initially I used to take it up seriously and conduct interviews...I was never really bothered about what they have studied and how much they have scored. Since we are into Computer Hardware - I used to start with a very simple question - What are the components of a computer? And guess what 95% of the people I interview the answer is " CPU, Monitor, Keyboard & Mouse". Only around 5% are able to go any further than that.
It just proves what you have to say here - that there are too many loop holes in our educational system that the management, the students and the teachers prefer to take the easy way out.

You have hit the bull's eye by describing the flaws in the educational system....In addition to what suggestions you have posted i would also recommend more of practical use of what ever knowledge we gain in college....Practically trying out what we have learnt would help us a long way in our careers...Once we have tried out doing things practically, then scoring marks in exams or preparing for it would be a cake walk....If the paper is more of theory or management oriented then one should associate the scenarios with real time examples...this would enhance our understanding as well as help us in gaining USEFUL knowledge....Hope the people of the top brass think something on these lines and bring about a necessary change in the education system.....
Kudos for writing on such a critical issue....Continue the good work....Cheers!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Krish. What you mentioned about practically implementing the things learnt goes without saying.
That is what education is all about. And Ya the trick that makes you understand the content is to associate the situations with real life implementations.. Thanks for going through and suggesting points buddy.. I expect your continued patronage for my blog..

Hi,
it is this attitude of the students that carried as a legacy, remember the saying that today's youth transform to tomorrow's responsible citizens. It was that attitude, be it whatever they were doing, as an individual you carry various roles in life, but one thing that is always constant whatever you do is your character which determines your attitude. when today's evaluators were students, they had the easy way out attitude. So everybody should understand that blaming somebody is useless, instead make a conscious effort to change your attitude, you change the way you go about things
all the best, regard this as your first step to transform into a responsible citizen

no wonder why most of the software companies train their employees who happen to be s/w engg themselves before assigning them work.

u have got the point right when u say its spoiling the students but u know the problem is not as simple and is way to complex but that doesnt mean there is no solution out. we can correct ourselves is one big step forward we can make but if not reciprocated from the other ends it would be futile.

let me present my view on this educational system alone.

to make studies more meaningful,as u said, students should not indulge in short cuts and the syllabus and stuff should be updated to recent standards. point well made. for this to be done, the process should start at the highest level where the university decides to change the syllabus and for that to happen they need to constitute an expert committee (so there is a chance that their bias can creep in here). once the syllabus has been changed, the existing teachers wont be possibly able to deal with it and there would be a shortage of qualified teachers to solve which the colleges need to recruit new ppl or enhance the existing ones. finally when everything done then comes the students' sincerity, which is no less than other steps, thus making the educational system more meaningful.

we are more than ready for a change and it simply reflects the power of indian youth and the capacity to identify the problems in the system ... but u know, in practice if things dont work in tandem, our work will become useless. In addition to realizing our responsibilities, we should also get into action to make an attempt to change these redundant systems so that if we dont benefit immediately atleast the next generation does not have to face this

Hi Sandeep/Deepu
I totally agree with you when you say the we should carry the burden of our responsibility. Good for us.
But you and me make only 2 people out of the 1 billion people we have in India. I think it is a better Idea to plug the loopholes than to wait for each and every person to read this blog and get a conscience attack...

hi deepesh

"attaining it in the right way is our fundamental responsibility."

yaa it need to be our responsibility and if every one of us take eduction in the correct sense then the responsibility is over and you have your knowledge with you , but to mug up for an examination and to have practical knowledge to be fit in a company are two different things...so i dont think so the way you need to study for an exam and work are the same ..

And about the evaluation methods teachers and all, do you how much time they get to correct a paper and money paid for that is too low per paper...so obviously money is a giant matter every where which is the cause ..

We cant change our system rules of evaluation, but we only make sure that we aren't cheating ourselves

and your friend just told you an case of correction, there are people who correct and give marks just to what is correct...its not correct to blame blindly :)

keep up buddy...

haii deepesh....

tis is the first time i m lookin at ur posts... and they r very impressive. well, u have successfully pointed out the flaws in our edu system.

my opinion, we try to study quantitatively rather than qualitatively. i seriously feel there
is no point in studying these days.. its of little use. there r countless reasons 4 tis. however, i say wat i think r imp.

first and foremost.. jus look at the no of ppl studying.. i mean obviously, irrespective of personal interests, one is forced to study 4 a living. and marks r the scale of ur study. i mean nobosy has the time to look at stuff conceptually.. all every1 needs is marks. and thts how the students got evolved. they have proved tht u don need to study 4 a sem to get on with a subject.. cos all it takes is a night of study to get through the paper. so, nobody is to blame!!
